Operation Active Endeavour

Taranto, Italy 23 May 2007—NATO’s Secretary General, the Permanent Representatives of the North Atlantic Council (NAC), the Chairman and the members of the Military Committee and the Supreme Allied Commander Europe (SACEUR), traveled to the Italian port city of Taranto on 23 May and embarked on NATO’s Standing Maritime Group Two (SNMG2) vessels to witness the operational capabilities of the naval force, during the NAC-MC Sea Day. The Italian Undersecretary of Defence was the guest of honour.

The sea programme demonstrated the capabilities of NATO’s Standing Maritime Groups and highlighted Operation Active Endeavour, NATO’s maritime contribution to the fight against international terrorism.  

The Ambassadors and senior military officials visited the ships and witnessed demonstrations of a compliant boarding, fast patrol boat attack, replenishment at sea, anti-submarine and air defence warfare. Vessels and aircraft from six  NATO nations from Italy, Greece, Spain, Turkey, the United Kingdom and the United States of America plus one partner nation, Ukraine, took part, demonstrating the level of interoperability  among NATO's and partner’s multinational naval forces.
