Equipment support to Afghan National Army

18 January 2007

Hungarian military equipment is in transit to Afghanistan. Last year Hungary offered some 20.000 submachine guns and ammunitions in the framework of a NATO initiative to support the nascent Afghan National Army (ANA). The weapons and ammunitions are from surplus stocks of Hungarian Defence Forces.

We are pleased that we can support the ANA with this equipment” said
Istvan Bocskai, the spokesman of the Hungarian Ministry of Defence.

Last year the North Atlantic Committee agreed to support the G8 Partner Nations’ efforts to equip the ANA. NATO authorities received many offers from member nations as a contribution to the building of indigenous military forces in Afghanistan. ANA validated these donations to ensure they meet their needs. The first transport arrived in Kabul last November comprising some 10.000 Slovenian AK-47 submachine guns and ammunitions.

The provision of direct support to the ANA is one of NATO-ISAF’s key military tasks. NATO-ISAF has now fought alongside the ANA and is committed to provide continued direct support to it, through mentoring, training and equipment support.
