SHAPE actively supports Poland in preparation of its operation in Iraq

30 June 2003

Admiral Rainer Feist (second on the right) chaired a two-hours Force Review Conference at SHAPE on 30 June 2003 on NATO's support to Poland in Iraq.

SHAPE, Belgium – On 30 June, 2003, a Force Review Conference was held at SHAPE to finalize discussions on force requirements between NATO, partner nations and Poland in order to support the ally in putting together capabilities in the context of a stabilization force in Iraq and to conclude necessary arrangements for its implementation.

Deputy Supreme Allied Commander Europe (DSACEUR), German Admiral Rainer Feist, chaired the meeting. NATO agreed, at the request of Poland, to actively engage in supporting its ally with this challenging operation. A majority of member nations have already signalled support to Poland on a bilateral basis. All requirements were reviewed against the bilateral offers and those that have been provided through NATO channels.

The conference is part of the normal military planning cycle at SHAPE, usually activated for any NATO operation, and gives contributing nations the opportunity to discuss details, provide offers and finalize the generation process.

With the great support of NATO and its partner nations, I am very glad to be able to provide capable forces and necessary arrangements to Poland to enable the commander in theatre to fulfil a difficult task,” said Admiral Feist at the end of the conference.

The conference was the peak event of a serial of bilateral and multi-national meetings and discussions. SHAPE again proved to have a successful system and expertise in place to translate political decisions into military actions.
