CURRENT OPERATIONS

 

 

ACTIVE ENDEAVOUR -- Under Operation Active Endeavour, NATO ships are patrolling the Mediterranean, monitoring shipping and providing escorts to non-military vessels through the Straits of Gibraltar to help detect, deter and protect against terrorist activity.


AFGHANISTAN -- Through its leadership of the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF), NATO is helping establish the conditions in which Afghanistan can enjoy a representative government and self-sustaining peace and security.

BOSNIA (Sarajevo HQ) -- The primary mission for NATO Headquarters Sarajevo will be Defence Reform. We will assist BiH to meet requirements for the NATO Partnership for Peace (PfP) program and eventually membership in the NATO alliance.

IRAQ -- NATO is helping Iraq provide for its own security by training Iraqi personnel and supporting the development of the country’s security institutions.

KOSOVO -- The Kosovo Force (KFOR) is a NATO-led international force responsible for establishing and maintaining security in Kosovo. This peace-enforcement force entered Kosovo on 12 June 1999 under a United Nations mandate, two days after the adoption of UN Security Council Resolution 1244.

 

PAST OPERATIONS

 

 

DARFUR -- Following a request by the African Union (AU), NATO has helped the AU expand its peacekeeping mission in Darfur by providing airlift for additional AU peacekeepers into the region and by training AU forces.

BOSNIA -- Between December 1996 and December 2004, NATO led an international Stabilisation Force (SFOR) in Bosnia and Herzegovina, helping to maintain a secure environment and facilitating the country's reconstruction in the wake of the 1992-1995 war.

KATRINA -- NATO nations approved a naval and air operation to bring relief supplies from Europe to the United States, to assist the US in recovering from Hurricane Katrina. Since September 3 rd, NATO has been helping to coordinate offers of assistance to meet the requirements set out by the US Government.

 

PAKISTAN -- The Pakistani Government asked NATO for assistance not just for those injured during the earthquake, but also to prevent a second wave of fatalities due to the lack of food, proper medical care and shelter. NATO’s Disaster Relief Operation was a direct and tailored response to the request of the Pakistani Government and was focused on providing assistance as quickly as possible.
