07 Jan - La Spezia - A maritime safety conference, held at the NATO Underwater Research Centre, included briefings on mine countermeasures, port protection and terrorism. 07 Jan - SHAPE - Big black cars under federal police escort are not precisely an uncommon sight at SHAPE with dignitaries visiting on a regular base. But a car under police escort pulling into the engineering (200) draws a few onlookers. Especially if the building being pulled in front of is a recently refurbished building with a meters high fence and a state-of-the-art security system. The principal of the main vehicle is Admiral Giampaolo Di Paola of Italy, recently appointed Chairman of the Military Committee for a visit of the newly housed NATO Special Forces Coordination Centre (NSCC).

SACEUR's Quotes of Note |
"The current counter-narcotics effort (in Afghanistan) is ineffective. The money from the narcotics trade is feeding the insurgency. It buys weapons and pays fighters - the weapons and fighters that kill soldiers and Afghan citizens alike. It is a cancer, fuelling the insurgency, contributing to corruption, impeding legitimate commerce, and undermining governance. Indeed NATO must step up to this task."
"I'm not talking about crop eradication but about destroying the ability by Taliban to buy materiel for IEDs, the ability by Taliban to buy the trigger."
