The objective of the NIG is to provide the Belarus Academy of Sciences with videoconferencing facilities, in order to improve its level of research and education, and to open a gateway for knowledge transfer and international cooperation.

The National Academy of Sciences consists of more than a hundred R&D institutions with about 1700 scientists covering all areas of science. The Belarus scientists will use the facilities both for regional academic communication and for international communication. 

The videoconferencing facilities connect the Headquarters of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus in Minsk and its Regional Scientific Departments located in five other main cities: Gomel, Brest, Vitebsk, Grodno and Mogilev. They connect to the internet through BASNET, the Belarusian National Research and Education Network, which connects to the European academic network GEANT, and thus to the Virtual Silk Highway.

This project is done in the context of a larger objective, which is to equip each of the countries that participate in the Virtual Silk Highway project, with videoconferencing capabilities. The project thus benefits from the expertise of the Virtual Silk Highway technicians and enables Belarus scientists to communicate through the network of videoconferencing facilities which NATO has established throughout the Virtual Silk Highway.
