This NIG supports the installation of a satellite antenna and a radio network in Kabul University. This networking infrastructure grant was the first initiative of the NATO Science Program to bring internet connectivity to Afghanista, through the Virtual Silk Highway.
The Silk satellite antenna connects Kabul University to the internet, via the Silk network. It receives signals from a satellite which is connected to the hub of the network, situated in Hamburg. The dish is situated on the roof of the chancellor’s office in Kabul university, and is presently operating in a stable manner. The network operations centre was equipped with servers and routers in order to bring worldwide internet access to Kabul University. The NATO Science for Peace and Security Program presently assists Kabul university to staff and maintain the network operations centre, by providing expertise, technicians and contact with local experts. The NATO Science for Peace and Security Program works in close collaboration with the chancellor of Kabul University to coordinate these activities.
