05-Sep-2007 HRH Princess Aisha of Jordan delivers address at workshop on NATO-Jordanian Cooperation
Forty five scientists and representatives from NATO and Partner countries met in Amman, Jordan, earlier this year to exchange scientific findings in the areas of counterterrorism, crisis management systems and water resources. HRH Princess Aisha of Jordan, who plays an active role in scientific activities both in Jordan and at NATO, was instrumental in organising the workshop and also addressed the participants and guest speakers. During one session, clinical psychologist Dr. Tayseer Elias Ahmad from the Royal Medical Services spoke about the “psychological effects” on victims following the terrorist attacks in Amman in 2005, when 90 people lost their lives and hundreds were injured. Dr. Ahmad, who treated many of the victims, stated that he and his fellow colleagues had “greatly benefited” from a NATO Advanced Research Workshop held in Amman in 2006 related to the psychosocial implications of terrorism. In order to extend cooperation in the field of crisis management, Dr. Ahmad added that Jordanian scientists will submit proposals to the NATO Science for Peace and Security programme to carry out further studies and research. NATO SPS director Fernando Carvalho-Rodrigues explained that the Jordanian proposals will be examined by the NATO expert panel on Human and Societal Dynamics. If a proposal is accepted, the Jordanian scientists will be paired with a NATO country peer, which will contribute to strengthening the existing cooperation between the Alliance and Mediterranean Dialogue countries |
