SPS Programme info event organised in Georgia

A two-day seminar was co-organised recently by the Georgian National Science Foundation (GNSF) and NATO’s Public Diplomacy Division, to inform scientists about the past, present and future work of NATO’s Science for Peace and Security (SPS) Programme in Georgia.

Around 70 Georgian scientists from the capital and other provinces attended the event at Iv. Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University, Tbilisi, Georgia, with the Vice Prime-Minister and State Minister for Euro-Atlantic Integration, Mr. George Baramidze delivering the opening address.

The speakers included a representative from NATO, Georgian scientists currently involved with the SPS Programme and other experts who have served as members of Advisory Panels, co-directors of Science for Peace Projects and Collaborative Linkage Grants, as well as recipients of Reintegration Grants.

From the exchange of experiences and information it is clearly evident that the support of Georgian scientists through the NATO-sponsored activities has been crucial for the progress of science in the country which has experienced very difficult times during the past 15 years.

NATO ranks among the top three international organisations that have provided opportunities for co-operation through grants, and the young generation of scientists in particular and their host organisations in Georgia, complimented the SPS Programme for the simplicity of the application process, the flexibility of its administration, and the value it has provided for their country, its institutions and also for their careers.
