NATO SfP Project co-director honoured by Russian Academy of Science

The SPS Committee is pleased to announce that Professor Thomas Haertlé from INRA (French National Institute for Argricultural Research) in Nantes, has been awarded the title of Doctor Honoris causa of the Russian Academy of Science.

Professor Haertlé is co-director of the NATO Science for Peace Project on the Study of Antimicrobial and Hypoallergenic Products of Lactic Acid Bacteria.

This 3 year project which began in October 2006, brings together scientists from Armenia, Azerbaijan, Bulgaria, Egypt, France and Russia, aims to identify and characterize LAB (lactic acid bacteria) substances for improving Food Safety standards.  It is expected that the best agents will be mass produced by participating SMEs to be used as food conservatives and as antimicrobial agents. This research will also lead to LABs for the manufacture of hypoallergenic dairy foods reducing the allergic consumer reactions.

The title will be formally awarded to Professor Haertlé in a ceremony on 27th April 2007 at the Russian Academy of Sciences in Kazan.
