Science Committee to meet in Kazakhstan

Following an invitation from Kazakhstan, the Science Committee will hold its summer meeting in Almaty, Kazakhstan, on 19 June 2006. The meeting will kick off the NATO week in the country, which will include a variety of events until 23 June.

This visit will help the committee to better adapt its programme to achieve more effective cooperation with Kazakhstan and its Central Asian neighbours. Kazakhstan is an active participant in cooperative projects under the NATO Programme for Security through Science (STS). For example, in 2005, over 70 Kazakh scientists participated in six workshops and two advanced summer schools sponsored by the STS Programme, covering such topics as “Groundwater and Ecosystem” and “Countering Nuclear/Radiological Terrorism”.

Three scientific workshops have been organised in Almaty in the context of the NATO week, each of which will be conducted over three days from 20 to 22 June, involving specialists from Kazakhstan, NATO countries and other Partner countries, on:

  • Radiological risks in Central Asia;
  • Principles, strategies and high technologies of information security; and,
  • Facilitating regional security in Central Asia through improved management of transboundary water basin resources

Throughout the week, staff of the NATO Public Diplomacy Division (PDD) will be involved in several activities such as a regional conference of NATO country embassies in Central Asia; a youth seminar for young diplomats and politicians and the inauguration of a NATO Information Centre, both at the al-Farabi University; and, an information session on the STS Programme. The PDD staff will also visit Kazakh Ministries in the capital, Astana, where a youth seminar for young diplomats will be held at the Eurasian National University.

These initiatives will provide an opportunity for valuable exchanges between NATO representatives and Kazakh leaders, scientists and the successor generation.
