Science Committee approves new measures

New Grant Mechanism
Reintegration Grant (RIG)

A new support mechanism to help combat the ‘brain drain’ of scientists from Partner countries, was introduced by the NATO Science Committee at its Spring meeting earlier this month. Among other measures introduced were the inclusion of Partner-country priorities in the topics eligible for support under the programme, and stipends for laboratory assistance services for Science for Peace projects and computer networking infrastructure grants.

The Science Committee met in Brussels on 11 and 12 March, and approved a number of new elements to be included in the Security Through Science Programme. These new programme elements are as follows:

  • Introduction of Reintegration Grants, a new support mechanism to assist scientists from Partner countries currently working in NATO countries to return to a research institution in their home countries. Note that for the first call for applications for in 2004, the deadline for receipt of applications for Reintegration Grants has been extended to 30 April. The Reintegration Grant replaces the Science Fellowships.
  • As well as security-related priority research topics, partner-country priority areas are also now eligible for support. The partner-country priorities may be found listed among the Topics Supported.
  • Stipends of up to 10% of the grant may be paid for laboratory assistance services to young key researchers in Science for Peace projects, or to the expert in charge of the implementation of a Computer Networking Infrastructure Grant.
