Innovative Applications of GIS into Geological Cartography

This was a question addressed during a workshop on geological cartography, which took place in Kazimierz Dolny, Poland, at the end of November. The context of the question was the relationship of geology to land-use and water planning.

Five specific recommendations were framed by experts from 29 countries with the aim of being able to provide government decision-makers in NATO and Partner countries with the geological information necessary to make crucial water, resource and environmental decisions, and to deal with potential hazards such as earthquakes and landslides.

The proceedings of the workshop are in preparation, and will be published by Kluwer Academic Publishers in Spring in the NATO Science Series. A summary is provided here of the Conclusions and Recommendations from the workshop, as prepared by the editorial board.
