Activities funded by Nations

Submission of Proposals by NATO and Partner countries

In addition to activities funded by the NATO international budget, the SPS Committee also engages in activities funded directly by one or more nations. These consist of Pilot Studies, Short-term Projects and Topical Workshops which are aligned with NATO’s Strategic Objectives and are in areas of priority to NATO, Partner or Mediterranean Dialogue countries. By implementing these activities the SPS Committee is able to respond rapidly to the most critical needs of nations and develop practical recommendations for defined end users.

Any NATO or Partner country can initiate a new proposal. The initiating nation seeks the participation of other NATO and Partner nations, however this participation is always voluntary.

Although these activities are primarily funded directly by nations, the SPS programme can avail itself of a small budget to provide financial assistance (to cover transportation and/or living expenses) to experts who might otherwise have difficulty in obtaining the necessary funds to attend meetings of pilot studies, short-term projects or workshops. This is called the SPS Support Grant Programme and is open to experts from both NATO countries and those Partner countries eligible for support1.

(1) Partner countries eligible for support under the SPS Study Visit Programme: Albania, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyz Republic, Moldova, Montenegro, Russian Federation, Serbia, Tajikistan, the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, Turkmenistan, Ukraine, Uzbekistan.
