Introduction

The ITMs on Air Pollution Modelling and its Application are periodic conferences which started in 1971 in the framework of the pilot study on Air Pollution.

The ITM series is one of the main conference series on technical and scientific aspects of air pollution. It has a continuity and consistency of themes that is not approached by similar meetings. Most important is that the themes of ITM meetings have explicitly been managed to track current developments in the science and application of air pollution modelling.

The ITM series is now in its 39th year, with meetings every 18/24 months. It provides the only forum for exchange of ideas that necessarily spans the Atlantic Ocean. Participants come not only from NATO countries but also from many Partner and Mediterranean Dialogue Countries.

Research results regarding model development presented at ITM meetings often result in model development to the point that the models become commercial, regulatory and policy making tools. This outcome is specifically encouraged by the ITM series encouraging the presentation of new modelling approaches and yet also fostering the presentation of applied modelling works. This mix of developmental and applied work results in the ITM series has a positive influence on environmental management and regulation worldwide.
