4-th CCMS EMS Workshop ''Partnering for Solutions to Environmental Management Systems Implementation ''

National Military Academy, Tblisi, Georgia 2 - 6 October, 2006

About
Environmental Management Systems
The Ministry of Defence of Georgia in collaboration with the NATO Committee on the Challenges of Modern Society (CCMS) conducts the 4-th workshop on Environmental Management Systems (EMS) in the Military Sector. The title of the 4-th CCMS EMS Workshop will be ''Partnering for solutions to EMS Implementation Challenges”. It builds on the success of the three previous workshops held in Thun , Switzerland in January 2001, Vyskov , Czech Republic in October 2002, and Sonthofen , Germany in October 2004.

The goals of the workshop are to:

  • Provide participants with practical tools and techniques for implementing specific elements of EMS ;
  • Develop a viable “distance learning” tool for EMS practitioners using the NATO CCMS web site; and,
  • Stimulate interest in and commitment to Mentoring Partnerships between more experienced EMS practitioners and those who are new to the process.

Given the heavy emphasis on practical training in EMS, the number of presentations to plenary sessions has been strictly limited so that syndicate (breakout working groups) can concentrate on the practical application of EMS tools and procedures to their specific needs. The workshop will concentrate on the five-phase EMS Cycle of Continual Improvement (Policy, Planning, Implementation and Operation, Checking and Corrective Action, and Management Review).

The workshop will be of particular interest to those within the military organization tasked with environmental matters, particularly with the implementation of Environmental Management Systems aligned with the principles of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) 14001 standard.
