Synopsis of 5th PS Meeting on Food Chain Security

Background
Food Chain Security - pilot study
The fifth meeting of the NATO-CCMS Food Chain Security Pilot Study took place on May 4-5, 2006 in Helsinki, Finland with a total of 13 participants from 8 different countries.

The pilot study is led by Turkey and supported by representatives of 14 countries.

The objective of what is briefly called “Food Chain Security” is to study the safety and security of food stuffs in the face of their careless/ignorant handling as well as against expected terrorist attacks at the system which may destroy and/or degrade it at the source during distribution, processing and in the consumption phase. The study will include the protective and response measures, which may have to be taken to reduce the risk and mitigate the consequences of these threats to the food system.

Invited experts from Finland and Great Britain shared their views with the group. Also as it was agreed on the 4th group meeting, the group members completed missing country results of the questionnaire and it was time to decide “how to analyse the data?”

In this respect professional help in the analysis of the questionnaire results was taken on an overall method of how to analyse the collected data and how to submit the obtained individual questionnaire results. The group members are aware of the methodological limits of a comparison analysis but agreed to send the results in the format about 1 month prior to the 6th meeting which is scheduled to be held in Lisbon , Portugal on October-November 2006.
