Ballast Water Management with emphasis on
the Adriatic Sea
During the CCMS meeting in EAPC format held in Brussels on 8 April 2005, the CCMS representative for Croatia proposed the organization of EAPC/CCMS workshop on “Ballast Water Management with special emphasis on the Adriatic Sea”. Slovenia has expressed its willingness to co-direct the event.
As a follow up, delegations from Croatia and Slovenia as well as representatives from NATO CCMS held a preparatory meeting on 14 March 2006 in Ljubljana to discuss further steps.
The main aim of the workshop will be to enhance the existing co-operation in the region on the ballast water management issue, developing contingency and ballast water management plans, promoting the implementation of the IMO convention and existing activities in the Adriatic Sea, and exchange experience with other countries adjacent to semi-closed seas. According with lessons learned, the project proposal for the preparation of joint Ballast water Management Plan for the Adriatic Sea will be discussed.
Slovenia and Croatia will co-chair the workshop.
A preparatory expert meeting will be organized in Slovenia in Portoroz on 7 June 2006. The meeting will involve representatives of all participating nations and will be devoted at identifying the main focus of the workshop.
The second step will be the organization of the workshop. It has been agreed that the workshop will tentatively take place in May 2007 and it will be hosted by Croatia.
