Austria and The Netherlands have offered to organise a CCMS workshop on “Environmental Aspects of Military Compounds” in Vienna, Austria. The following countries have indicated their interest to participate in this event, either during the annual meeting of the Environmental Protection Working Group (December 2004) or at the CCMS-EAPC Plenary meeting (April 2005): Austria, Belgium, Canada, Croatia, the Czech Republic, Denmark, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Lithuania, the Netherlands, Rumania, the United Kingdom and the United States of America.
The date for the workshop has been set on May 9-11, 2006.

The general idea of the workshop is to discuss the experiences with different environmental aspects that occur while building and operating a military field camp or compound. The objectives of the workshop are more specific:

  • to establish how the participating countries have covered the environmental aspects of military compounds in procedures and techniques,
  • to share experiences, successes and failures in this field.
  • to establish a network of experts so that bilateral contacts can follow and
  • to determine whether follow-up activities such as a short-term project or pilot study are useful and desirable.

The scope of the workshop will be the materiel, methods, techniques and procedures used during the lifecycle of compounds. This encompasses design, construction, operation, transfer to other nations and dismantling of compounds. The different aspects are drinking water facilities, wastewater treatment, waste management, storage of dangerous substances, soil protection and energy supply.

It is envisaged to invite experts on the design, construction and daily operation of military compounds to take part in the workshop. Also experts involved in the selection and procurement of equipment for these aspects (such as mobile water and wastewater treatment plants, waste incinerators or energy supply equipment) and environmental experts will invited. Most likely these experts will be found in the engineering, logistical, materiel and environmental branches of the ministries of Defence.

We invite you to attend this workshop, which will take place at the National Defence College in Vienna, Austria, on the 9th-11th of May 2006. For three days you will have the opportunity to present your knowledge and experience and discuss the different environmental issues of military camps with experts from other Defence Ministries and Armed Forces. A presentation on one of the topics mentioned above will be more then welcome. Please indicate on the registration form if you intend to give a presentation.

Please find hereafter the necessary practical and (preliminary) logistical information on the workshop. Do not hesitate to contact the organising committee if you have further questions on the organisation.

We hope to welcome you in Vienna in May 2006!
