STOPWATCH 3, Debate 1:
Expanding NATO's political consultations

2 February 2006

Multimedia
Stopwatch : A special interactive video forum series with Jamie Shea

In early 2005, NATO countries agreed to have more strategic political dialogue at NATO. The aim was to give Allies greater freedom and opportunity to discuss key security issues, even if NATO was not immediately involved in the issue.

A year on, has this happened? Is NATO now the place where North America and Europe discuss freely the key political and strategic issues on the transatlantic agenda? Is NATO the right forum? Can more be done to strengthen political dialogue at NATO?

These and other questions are tackled in the first debate of the third season of NATO's Stopwatch video debates.

Moderated by Mr. Jamie Shea

The experts taking part were:

  • Mr. Charles Court, Canadian Deputy Permanent Representative
  • Mr. Victor Rønnenberg, Norwegian Deputy Permanent Representative
  • Dr. Peter Weilemann, Director of Konrad Adenauer Stiftung
