STOPWATCH 2, Debate 4:
Transforming NATO

19 December 2005

Multimedia
Stopwatch : A special interactive video forum series with Jamie Shea

The Alliance is undergoing a major transformation aimed at adapting its capabilities and structures to 21 st century security threats. This includes a new military command structure, the development of the expeditionary NATO Response Force, as well as capabilities to counter terrorist attacks with weapons of mass destruction. On the political side, this involves strengthening NATO as a political forum where Europe and North America discuss strategic issues.

How much has been accomplished already? What are the pressing areas that still need to be addressed? And what are the key benchmarks by which the Alliance’s transformation will be judged?

Moderated by Mr. Jamie Shea

The experts taking part were:

  • Mr. John Kriendler - Marshall Centre, Garmisch, Germany.
  • Mr. Ludwig Decamps - Policy Planning Unit, NATO.
  • Mr. John Colston - Assistant Secretary General, Defence Policy and Planning Division, NATO.
