The second STOPWATCH forum took a hard look at NATO's
efforts to enhance political and practical cooperation with the countries
of the Mediterranean and Middle East. The expert panel discussed NATO's
new Istanbul Cooperation Initiative, the challenges of overcoming stereotypes
of perception, and what NATO can offer the region. Tough questions on
relations with Libya, the Palestinian Authority and a NATO role in the
Palestinian-Israeli dispute were also tackled.
The experts taking part were:
- Nicola de Santis, Coordinator of the Mediterranean Dialogue and Istanbul Cooperation Initiative (ICI) countries
- Col. Giuseppe Clemente, Italian army, Section Chief of the Mediterranean Dialogue in the Cooperation and Regional Security Division (C& RS)
- Habib Toumi, Editor of the Bahrain Tribune
- Mustefa Souag, Senior Correspondent and Editorial Bureau Chief for Aljazeera (London Bureau)
