Science for Peace and Security (SPS) Committee

Principal decision-making authority for the NATO Science for Peace and Security Programme. The Committee oversees an annual Work Programme based on "Key Priorities" in line with NATO’s strategic objectives, develops top-down projects in the Committee’s key priority areas, and provides policy guidance for the overall programme.

Levels The SPS Committee normally meets twice a year, including one meeting in Euro-Atlantic Partnership Council (EAPC) format and two meetings in the NATO-Russia Council SPS Committee format. A third plenary may be held each year if the Committee decides that such a meeting is needed. Senior national representatives qualified to speak for their nations on SPS issues and policy. An alternate member may be appointed to act on behalf of the national representative.
Principal subordinate committees The SPS Committee has four Advisory Panels: Chemistry/Biology/Physics (CBP) panel, Environment Security (ESP) panel, Human and Societal Dynamics (HSD) panel, and Information and Communications Security (ICS) panel. These panels assist the committee in its work of assessing and selecting applications for support grants. Panel members are chosen by the Committee from among the international scientific community. Associate Members from Partner and Mediterranean Dialogue countries also serve on the Advisory Panels.
