Security is key for development
in western Afghanistan
Sustained security operations in the Farah and Golestan provinces
have allowed ISAF to continue its reconstruction and development
activities, notably in the fields of education, medical aid and
water resources.
In Golestan, a number of schools are being refurbished and a variety of
educational materials such as chairs, blackboards, exercise books, chalks
and pens have been donated to cover the needs of students and more than 20
teachers.
Regional Command West (RC-West) medical teams have also brought assistance
to people in rural villages and remote places, where international organizations
and non governmental organizations cannot access. So far, at least 1,300
Afghan patients have received treatment from ISAF medical teams.
Sustainable water resource management strategies and plans covering the
irrigation and drinking water supply have been developed. Western Provincial
Reconstruction Teams have financed new water supply networks and wells: 150
wells have been built so far in Herat Province and several drilling sites
have been set in Farah Province where eight wells will be built.
RC-West’s troops ensure a continuous presence on the ground, supporting
the Afghan National Army and the Afghan National Police in the conduct of
operations.
RC-West officials will soon meet the Afghan authorities (governmental, military
and security leaders) to discuss current and future security and development
efforts in the region.
