1993

1. 1. 1993 – Slovakia became an independent state after the split of Czech and Slovak Federal Republic into two sovereign states.

23. 2. 1993 – Mr. Vladimír Meciar, Prime Minister of Slovakia, paid an official visit to NATO HQ.

29. 3. 1993– Meeting of NATO Defence Ministers with Cooperation Partners to review progress in cooperation on defece related matters, as well as to exchange views on the broader security issues.

20. 9. 1993– NACC meeting at NATO HQ. A call for an end to fighting in Georgia and a condemnation of cease-fire violations of the Abkhazian forces was issued.

4. 11. 1993 – Mr. Michal Kovác, President of the Slovak Republic, paid an official visit to NATO HQ.

3. 12. 1993 - At the NACC ministerial meeting NATO and NACC Foreign Ministers approved the second report by the NACC Ad Hoc Group on Cooperation in Peacekeeping, as well as the NACC Work Plan for 1994.

1994

10. – 11. 1. 1994 - At the Brussels Summit, Alliance Heads of State and Government launch the Partnership for Peace (PfP), issuing an invitation to all NACC partner countries and CSCE states able and willing to participate. The PfP Framework Document is published.

9. 2. 1994 - Mr. Vladimír Meciar, Prime Minister of Slovakia, signs the PfP Framework Document at NATO HQ.

11. – 14. 5. 1994 - The Chairman of the NATO Military Committee, Field Marshall Sir Richard Vincent, visited Slovakia.

25. 5. 1994 - Slovakia submitted its PfP Presentation document to NATO

10. 6. 1994 - The NACC ministerial meeting was held in Istanbul. Foreign Ministers issued a third Report on peacekeeping by the Ad Hoc Group on Cooperation in Peacekeeping

22. 6. 1994 - The Security Agreement between the NATO and the Slovak Republic is signed

23. 11. 1994 - Slovakia´s PfP Individual Partnership Programme with NATO is formally accepted.

1995

30. – 31. 5. 1995 - The NATO and the NACC Foreign Ministers met in Noordwijk.

8. 9. 1995 - The Slovak Republic as the first of the PfP members approved the “Agreement between the NATO countries and the countries participating in the PfP on the status of forces” (Status of Forces Agreement - SOFA). The SOFA became valid in January 1996 and was published in the Official Journal of the Slovak Republic on 15. December 1997.

21. 9. 1995 - NATO Ambassadors approved a Study on the NATO enlargement outlining the membership requirements for countries wanting to join the Alliance.

28. 9. 1995 - NATO presented the conclusions of the Study on the NATO enlargement to NACC and PfP Cooperation partners.

20. 12. 1995 - UN peacekeeping forces (UNPROFOR) handed over command of military operations in Bosnia to the NATO-led Implementation Force (IFOR). Slovakia contributed largely with its troops to both operations.

1996

29. - 30. 4. 1996 – Mr. Javier Solana, NATO Secretary General, pays an official visit to Slovakia.

16. - 17. 10. 1996 – Mr. Michal Kovác, President of the Slovak Republic, visitsNATO HQ and meets with NATO Secretary General Javier Solana.

20. 12. 1996– NATO´s Implementation Force (IFOR) was replaced by SFOR (Stabilisation Force). Slovakia is again involved in the operation.

1997

30. 5. 1997- Concluding a meeting of the North Atlantic Cooperation Council and an inaugural meeting of the Euro-Atlantic Partnership Council (EAPC) in Sintra, Portugal. NATO and Cooperation Partner Foreign Ministers approved the EAPC Basic Document. The Slovak Republic became a founding nation of the Euro-Atlantic Cooperation Council.

8. – 9. 7. 1997 – Mr. Vladimír Meciar, Prime Minister of the Slovak Republic, took part in the Madrid EAPC Summit. During the NATO Madrid Summit Heads of State and Government agreed to invite Czech Republic, Hungary and Poland to begin accession talks with NATO with a view of becoming members of the Alliance. They reaffirm that NATO remained open to new members and agreed to review the process at their next meeting in 1999.

1998

14. 1. 1998 - Euro-Atlantic Partnership Council published its Action Plan for 1998-2000.

27. – 28. 4. 1998 - EAPC Seminar in Bratislava on Democratic Control of Defence Expenditures

28. 5. 1998 - Mr. Jozef Šesták, Foreign State Secretary, represented Slovakia at the Luxembourg EAPC meeting.

12. 6. 1998 - Mr. Ján Stank, Defence Minister, took part in the EAPC meeting in Brussels

5. 11. 1998 - Mr. Mikuláša Dzurinda, the Prime Minister of the Slovak Republic, paid an official visit to NATO HQ.

8. 12. 1998 - Mr. Eduard Kukan, Slovak Foreign Minister, took part in the EAPC Foreign Minister meeting. Ministers discussed future security challenges and NATO-Partner cooperation in the context of EAPC and PfP, focusing on the situation in Bosnia and Herzegovina and in Kosovo. They reviewed progress in the implementation of the EAPC Basic Document and the enhancement of the PfP, and endorsed an updated EAPC Action Plan 1998-2000.

18. 12. 1998 - Mr. Pavol Kanis, Slovak Minister of Defence, participated in the EAPC meeting in Brussels. During the meeting NATO Ministers welcome the willingness of Partners to contribute to the NATO-led Kosovo air verification mission.

1999

23. – 25. 4. 1999 - During the Washington summit, where the NATO met for the fist time at “19”, Alliance launched several important initiatives in order to prepare NATO for the challenges of the 21st century. NATO issued Washington Declaration and announced the approval of an updated Strategic Concept, it also called for strengthening of the operational dimension of PfP as well as EAPC consultation and cooperation. More importantly, it proposed the Membership Action Plan as an individualized tool of assistance to countries aspiring for NATO membership. Slovakia was listed among those aspirant countries. Mr. Mikuláš Dzurinda, Slovak Prime Minister, took part in the Washington EAPC summit, where the report “Towards a Partnership for the 21st Centuty was endorsed.

9. 6. 1999 - Slovak Government in accordance with the MAP agreed in Washington approved the Program on Assuring the Preparation of Slovakia for the NATO Membership. It also established the necessary inter-institutional body “Committee of the Preparation for NATO Membership” with its deliberation no. 480/ 1999. Few months afterwards in October Government adopted the first Annual National Programme of the Preparation for the NATO Membership, which was submitted to NATO for comments.

13. 7. 1999 - Mr. Rudolf Schuster, the President of the Slovak Republic, paid an official visit to NATO.

15. 11. 1999 - SPC(R) meeting with Slovakia was held in Brussels. It dealt with important political, economic a security issues in the context of the implementation of the MAP.

3. 12. 1999 - Mr. Pavol Kanis, Slovak Defence Minster, took part in the EAPC Defence Ministers meeting in Washington.

16. 12. 1999 - Mr. Eduard Kukan, Slovak Foreign Minister, participated in the ministerial EAPC meeting in Brussels, during which the EAPC Action Plan 2000-2002 was approved.

2000

10. – 11. 2. 2000 - Lord Robertson, NATO Secretary General, visits Slovakia.

22. – 24. 2. 2000 - NATO team led by Assistant Secretary General Edgar Buckley visits Slovakia.

10. 3. 2000 - Politico-Military Steering Committee meets with Slovakia in order to evaluate the Individual Partnership Programme and Planning and Review Process.

22. 3. 2000 - Mr. Wesley Clark, Supreme Allied Commander Europe (SACEUR), visits Slovakia.

7. 4. 2000 - Joint NAC + Slovakia meeting in Brussels, which focused on the results of the preparation process to NATO in Slovakia after the first year of the MAP. Slovakia was represented by Foreign Minister Eduard Kukan and Defence Minister Pavol Kanis.

11. 5. 2000 - Lord Robertson, Secretary General, pays a visit to Slovakia.

25. 5. 2000 - Mr. Eduard Kukan, Foreign Minister, participated in the Florence EAPC meeting. Foreign Ministers discussed a range of security issues including the South-East Europe Initiative and developments in Kosovo and in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

9. 6. 2000 - Mr. Pavol Kanis, Slovak Minister of Defence, took part in the EAPC meting in Brussels. The Council welcomed the development of the first full set of Partnership goals and received a Summary Report on the Partnership for Peace Planning and Review Process (PARP).

27. 9. 2000 - Slovak Government with its deliberation no. 773/2000 approved 2001 Draft Annual National Programme of Preparation for NATO Membership, which was than transmitted to the Alliance for the comments.

9. 10. 2000 - SPC(R) meeting with Slovakia was held in Brussels. The 2001 Annual National Programme of Preparation for NATO membership was discussed.

14. 11. 2000 - General Joseph W. Ralston, Supreme Allied Commander Europe (SACEUR), visits Slovakia.

24. 11. 2000 - Mr. Mikuláš Dzurinda, Prime Minister of the Slovak Republic, met former NATO Secretary General Lord Robertson in NATO HQ.

6. 12. 2000 - Mr. Jozef Pivarci, Defence State Secretary, represented Slovakia at the EAPC meeting in Brussels.

15. 12. 2000 - Mr. Eduard Kukan, Slovak Foreign Minister, participated in the EAPC meeting in Brussels. Foreign Ministers reviewed the situation in the former Yugoslavia and examined other aspects of cooperation including the EAPC´s future role and contribution to regional cooperation initiatives.

2001

23. 2. 2001 - The National Council of the Slovak Republic amended the Constitution by the constitutional act no. 90/ 2001 which simplified the process of fulfilling the obligations under collective defence clause. It simplified also the mechanism of sending and accepting foreign troops for humanitarian operations, military exercises and military observation missions by granting the government the right to deliberate on these issues. It also empowered Slovak Government with the right to decide on granting the right of transit through Slovak territory to foreign troops.

27. 3. 2001 - The National Council of the Slovak Republic approved new Security Strategy, which already reflected the changing international environment and Slovakia ´s commitments to join NATO.

April 2001, The first round of the grant competition for the NGOs aiming at promoting the public awareness of the NATO and security issues was announced. It was than succeed by other rounds of competitions throughout the whole process of preparation for NATO membership. More than sixty non-governmental organization were involved in this information initiative.

20. 4. 2004 - Joint meeting of the NAC and Slovakia was held in Brussels. The evaluation of the MAP during the second year of its implementation was at the programme.

10. – 12. 5. 2001 - Mr. Mikuláš Durinda hosted an international conference “Europe´s New Democracies: Leadership and Responsibility”. This conference has been a continuation of a dialogue and process that began in Vilnius where nine new democracies expressed their wish and resolve to join the North-Atlantic Treaty Organisation. In March 2004, Prime Minister M. Dzurinda will hold a follow-up conference to this initiative.

25. 5. 2001 - The National Council of the Slovak Republic approved new Defence Strategy of the Slovak Republic.

June 2001 - During the informal NATO Summit the “zero enlargement scenario during the Prague summit” was definitely out of the table.

8. 6. 2001 - Mr, Eduard Kukan, Foreign Minister, participated in the EAPC meeting in Budapest.

26. 9. 2001 - Slovak Government with its deliberation no. 923/2001 approved the Draft of the Annual National Programme of Preparation of the Slovak Republic for NATO Membership (ANP PRENAME 2002 which reflected the Membership Action Plan) and handed it to the NATO two days latter.

17. 10. 2001 - The National Council of the Slovak Republic agreed to send 100 troops to NATO led operation in Kosovo (KFOR).

25. 10. 2001 - Slovak Government approved new Military Strategy of the Slovak Republic.

30. 10. 2001 - SPC(R) meeting with Slovakia in Brussels discussing the 2002 Annual National Program of Preparation for the NATO Membership.

19. 12. 2001 - Mr. Jozef Stank, Minister of Defence of the Slovak Republic, took part in the EAPC ministerial meeting in Brussels.

2002

28. 1. – 1. 2. 2002 – A Reinforced NATO team led by NATO Deputy Secretary General for political issues Günther Altenburg visited Slovakia.

12. 2. 2002 – Gen. Dieter Stöckmann, Deputy Supreme Allied Commander Europe (D-SACEUR). paid an official visit to Slovakia.

20. 2. 2002 – Politico-Military Steering Committee met with Slovakia in order to evaluate the Individual Partnership Program and Planning and Review Process.

27. 2. 2002 – Mr. Nicholas Burns, US Permanent Representative at the North Atlantic Council, visited Slovakia.

7. 3. 2002 – Mr. Rudolf Schuster, the President of the Slovak Republic, paid an official visit to NATO HQ.

13. 3. 2002 – NATO office of Security met in format 19+9. Slovakia was represented by the Director of National Security Office, Ján Mojžiš.

22. 3. 2002 – Joint NAC – Slovakia meeting in Brussels, which accomplished the third year of the implementation of the MAP.

25. - 27. 4. 2002 – Rose-Roth Seminar of the NATO Parliamentary Assembly with the presence of the Deputy Assistant Secretary General for Political Affairs D. Speckard took place in Bratislava.

April – May 2002 – The National Council of the Slovak Republic adopted several important legal amendments, namely Constitutional Law on the Security of State during the War, Warfare and Emergency State; Law on Military Service; Law on Defence and Law on Armed Forces. These amendments were important steps forward in pursuing security and defence reforms in Slovakia.

3. 5. 2002 – Gen. Joseph W. Ralston, Supreme Allied Commander Europe (SACEUR), paid a visit to Slovakia.

15. 5. 2002 – Mr. Eduard Kukan, Slovak Foreign Minister, represented Slovakia at the Reykjavik EAPC meeting.

5. 6. 2002 – Slovak Government with its deliberation no. 604/2002 approved a rule, which committed Slovakia to spend at least 2% of its GDP on defence budget effective from 2003.

7. 6. 2002 – Mr, Jozef Stank, Defence Minister, took part in the EAPC meeting in Brussels.

19. 6. 2002 – The National Council of the Slovak Republic approved the deployment of 40 soldiers to Baghram, for the operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan.

4. 9. 2002 – Slovak Government with its deliberation no. 994/2002 approved the 2003 Annual National Programme of the Preparation for NATO Membership.

7. – 8. 10 2002 – Mr. E.J. Parry, UK Permanent Representative at the North Atlantic Council, visited Slovakia.

9. 10. 2002 – Mr. Nicholas Burns, US Permanent Representative at the North Atlantic Council, visited Slovakia.

21. – 22. 11. 2002 – Mr. Rudolf Schuster, President of the Slovak Republic, and Mikuláš Dzurinda, Prime Minister, took part in the Prague EAPC Summit. Slovakia with other six countries was invited to start the accession talks with the view of joining the Alliance during the NATO Summit.

9. and 16. 12. 2002 – Two rounds of the NATO accession talks with Slovakia, which subsequently examined defence-military issues, security of information, resources, and the question of accession to “NATO legal acquis ”.

2003

January 2003 – A series of NATO team visits focusing on political, economic, defence and military issues, as well as the protection of classified information issues.

24. 1. 2003 – Mr. E. Buckley, Assistant Secretary General for defence planning and operations, visited Slovakia.

11. 2. 2003 – Mr. Pavol Hrušovský, the Chairman of the National Council of the Slovak Republic, paid an official visit to the NATO HQ.

20. – 21. 2. 2003 – Mr. D. Bereuter, a Congressman and a President of the NATO Parliamentary Assembly, paid a visit to Slovakia.

25. 2. 2003 – Slovak government discussed and approved Letter of Intent, which confirmed the will of Slovak Government to join NATO. A Timetable of reforms, which is a political commitment to proceede with reforms even after full membership in the Alliance, was attached to the former document.

10. 3. 2003 – Lord Robertson, NATO Secretary General, paid a visit to Slovakia. He met Slovak President Rudolf Schuster, Prime Minister Mikuláš Dzurinda and Foreign Minister Eduard Kukan, Foreign Minister Kukan handed him over a Letter of Intent.

26. 3. 2003 – The Ambassadors of the NATO member states signed the accession protocols of 7 invited countries in Brussels in presence of Foreign Ministers of 7 invited countries.

27. 3. 2003 – The Government of the Slovak Republic approved unanimously the accession of the Slovak Republic to the North Atlantic Treaty on its extraordinary meeting.

28. 3. 2003 – Canada, as the first NATO member, ratified the instruments of accession to the NATO of all 7 invited countries.

2. 4. 2003 – Slovak Government unified the existing NATO public information initiatives under the umbrella of one Information Strategy on NATO, which is managed by the Ministry of Defence.

10. 4. 2003 – The National Council of the Slovak Republic gave its approval to the accession to the Washington Treaty.

15. 4. 2003 – Mr. Rudolf Schuster, President of the Slovak Republic, signed the accession protocol to the North Atlantic Treaty. He accomplished by this act the internal ratification process of Washington Treaty.

3. – 4. 6. 2003– Mr. Eduard Kukan, Foreign Minister, participated in the Madrid ministerial meeting of NAC and EAPC.

13. – 14. 6. 2003 – Mr. Ivan Šimko, Defence Minister, represented Slovakia at the NAC, EAPC and DPC meeting in Brussels.

18. 6. 2003 – The North Atlantic Council decided to open most of Alliance committees and other bodies to Slovakia and other invited countries.

19. 6. 2003 – The National Council of the Slovak Republic approved the deployment of 105 soldier strong unit of demining engineers to operation Iraqi Freedom in Iraq (Al Hillah), where it should reinforce Polish contingent.

8. – 9. 10. 2003 – Mr. Martin Fedor, Defence State Secretary, represented Slovakia at the informal Defence Ministers meeting in Colorado Springs.

1. – 2. 12. 2003 – Mr. Martin Fedor, Defence State Secretary, participated in the NAC and EAPC in Brussels

4. – 5. 12. 2003 – Mr. Eduard Kukan, Slovak Foreign Minister, took part in the ministerial NAC and EAPC meeting. Slovakia was present at the NATO-Ukraine Commission for the first time.

8. - 9. 12. 2003 – Gen. Harald Kujat, the Chairman of NATO Military Committee, visited Slovakia.

2004

5. 2. 2004 – France as the last NATO member ratified the accession protocols in Senate.

6. 2. 2004 – Mr. Juraj Líška, Defence Minister, participated in the informal meeting of NATO Defence Ministers in Munich.

12. – 13. 2. 2004 – Gen. Jones, Supreme Allied Commander Europe, visited Slovakia.

17. 2. 2004 – Slovak Government approved a deployment of engineer unit and an officer to ISAF operation (under the NATO command) in Afghanistan. Final decision now lies with the National Council of the Slovak Republic.

March 2004 – Mr. Jaap de Hoop Scheffer, NATO Secretary General, to visit Slovakia.

18. – 19. 3. 2004 – Mr. Mikuláš Dzurinda, Prime Minister of the Slovak Republic, will host a conference “Towards a Wider Europe: The New Agenda” as a follow-up to his initiative of May 2001 “New European Democracies”. On the margins of the conference German Marshall Fund will hold a think-tank seminar on the same issues.

25. 5. – 1. 6. 2004 – Spring Session of the NATO Parliamentary Assembly to be held in Bratislava.
