Latvia’s Specialized Capabilities

Latvia’s National Armed Forces have participated in all NATO-led peace operations in Balkans since 1996. Participation in such operations allow Latvia to demonstrate its willingness and abilities to give the certain input for security and stability of Europe as well as show the compliance of Latvia’s Armed Forces with NATO standards.

Latvia was involved in the mission in Bosnia-Herzegovina from almost the very beginning of the operation when it participated with an infantry company. Latvia’s medical, military police and EOD teams have also participated in the Kosovo Verification Mission (KFOR).

Since February 2003 Latvia participates in the international operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan with the unit of military medicine experts.

Latvia’s participation in the Iraqi operation is our largest military contribution accounting for 150 servicemen (supply and logistics platoon, EOD team, and Infantry company) taking part in the mission.

Latvia intends also to provide specialised units, such as Military police, for the NATO Response Force at the 5th and 6th stage. Further down the road we will increase our commitments to the NRF providing Infantry and Explosive Ordnance Disposal units, and a Mine Countermeasures Vessel.

Latvia is willing to contribute in all four main areas of the Prague Capabilities Commitment1. We place a special emphasis on the development of deployment capabilities by air and sea.

Latvia has commenced the specialisation of its forces. Currently, it is planned to continue and develop the following capabilities: Infantry Battalion Group, Medical Team, Military Police Platoon, EOD Platoon, Mine Countermeasures Vessels, National Movement Team, and CIMIC Functional Specialists.

Participation in the international missions demonstrates the real ability and willingness of the country to become the full-fledged NATO member. It enables Latvia to fundamentally strengthen its co-operation with NATO states and its partners. Generally, Latvia’s units have acquired a very valuable practical experience in NATO-led operations and the work of Latvia’s units has also been highly appreciated in these operations.
