Exercise Clean Hunter 2004 (CN 04) NATO’s Major Annual Live-Flying Exercise in Northern Europe
RAMSTEIN AIRBASE, GE - Thirteen NATO nations will participate in a NATO air exercise from 14 to 25 June over the Alliance’s Northern Region to include Northern France. NATO exercise CLEAN HUNTER 2004 (CN04), is an annual live exercise, that will focus upon coordinated, allied air operations over Western Europe, with actual flying periods limited to 12-18 June and 21 to 25 June, in order to limit any unnecessary noise impact. The exercise areas extend from mid-France to Denmark and from the United Kingdom to mid-Poland. Participating nations will mainly fly from their home bases, except for those nations deploying aircraft into Northern Europe. The exercise will be conducted by Headquarters Allied Air Forces North (HQ AIRNORTH), Ramstein, Germany, through its Combined Air Operations Centres (CAOCs). CN04 will involve air forces from Belgium, Canada, the Czech Republic, Denmark, France, Germany, Greece, the Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Turkey, the United Kingdom, and the United States of America. CLEAN HUNTER 2004 is designed to promote training opportunities for all participating units, to maximize interaction between opposing forces and to exercise HQ AIRNORTH and its subordinate CAOCs in the planning and conduct of major co-ordinated live air operations. The exercise will involve many different types of aircraft for a wide range of operations. It plays a vital role in the maintenance of the professionalism of allied air forces. It runs concurrently with and is linked to other land and sea exercises, allowing joint planning and operations to be practised. There will be no exercise flying on weekends. However, waivers to allow low-level flying down to 500ft (above ground level) have been submitted by some nations. Operations will take place during daytime only. Headquarters have made every effort to avoid the unnecessary concentrations of aircraft noise in individual locations by using large exercise areas. In general, CLEAN HUNTER 2004 will not create much more additional flying to that of a normal flying day with the participating nations using their normal training sorties for the exercise.
