1996 Military Committee Tour
Military
Committee to Visit Portugal and Spain
- The Military Committee of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization,
the highest military authority in NATO, will visit military
installations and armed forces in Portugal and Spain during
the period 08-13 September 1996. The Military Committee is
composed of the Chiefs of Defence Staff of each member country
except Iceland, which has no armed forces. The tour is one
of a continuing programme of visits to regions of the Alliance.
- During both the Portuguese and the Spanish part of this
tour, the Military Committee will hold a meeting in Chiefs
of Staff Session, on 10 September 1996 in Cascais, Portugal
and on 13 September 1996 in Madrid, Spain.
- The visiting group includes the President of the Military
Committee, Admiral António Carlos Fuzeta da Ponte,
the Chairman of the Military Committee, General Klaus
Naumann, the Chiefs of Defence Staff who will be accompanied
by their Representatives to the Military Committee in Permanent
Session in Brussels. The Supreme Allied Commander Europe,
General George A. Joulwan, and the Supreme Allied Commander
Atlantic, General John J. Sheehan, will also participate in
the tour.
- The last Military Committee tour was in September 1995,
when Belgium, Luxembourg and The Netherlands were visited.
