Approximately 13 bigger fires have been burning since last week, affecting approximately 3.000 hectares of forest and 32 municipalities. The Government of the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia¹ on 18 July declared a crisis situation.

Fires in three critical locations are burning out of control; KOZJAK-DUM where the power station of the Kozjak lake is severely endangered; ZELINO village close to Tetovo; KATLANOVO, 15 km SE of Skopje. There is an urgent need for air intervention because the use of standard fire fighting equipment is ineffective, since the disaster area is mountainous.
