Defence Ministers' meeting: Reinforcing the ability to respond to new threats

At their second meeting since the 11 September attacks against the United States, NATO Defence Ministers focused their discussions, 18-19 December, on the fight against terrorism and ways of adapting the military capabilities of NATO member countries to new threats. Ways of rationalising peacekeeping forces in the Balkans and the new impetus given to NATO-Russia relations were also examined.

End of Year Message by the Secretary General

The year 2001 will go down in history as the year in which the threat of terrorism reached a new, hitherto unimaginable level. The horrifying events of September 11 have been burnt into our minds forever. Yet as traumatic as the events may have been, they will not erode our confidence in the future. Because we have a unique and precious asset: our solidarity.

First visit of an Algerian Head of State to NATO HQ
The President of the People's Republic of Algeria, Abdelaziz Bouteflika, on an official visit to Belgium, came to NATO HQ for a bilateral meeting with Lord Robertson on 20 December 2001. This is the first ever visit by an Algerian Head of State to the Alliance's headquarters in Brussels.
