Tour of countries aspiring to NATO membership continues

Following his visit to the Slovakian capital Bratislava last week, Lord Robertson travelled to Slovenia on 12 November as part of his tour of countries aspiring to NATO membership. In Ljubljana, he met with President Milan Kucan, Prime Minister Janez Drnovšek, Minister of Defence Anton Grizold, as well as with the Speaker and members of Parliament.

Civil protection training and ammunition disposal in Albania

NATO has been assisting the Albanian Armed Forces (AAF), in the context of the Alliance's Partnership for Peace programme, with ammunition management and disposal of unexploded munitions since 1997, when the country made a request for assistance following a major internal crisis.

New constitution for the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (1)

In a statement, NATO Secretary General, Lord Robertson, commended the passing of 15 constitutional amendments by the Parliament of the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (1) on 16 November. These internal reforms will "move the country closer to European standards on the equitable treatment of minorities", stated Lord Robertson, adding that the country is "setting an example to the rest of the world."

Cosmic dust studies aid battlefield communications

A workshop was held in Bratislava, Slovak Republic, 16-19 November, to study the Optics of Cosmic Dust. The interaction of electromagnetic radiation with dust particles has many applications in diverse fields of science. For instance, dust affects communications in battlefield environments and dust particles affect the output of aerosol monitors used to detect both pollutants and chemical and biological warfare agents.

Legislative elections in Kosovo

The legislative elections held in the province of Kosovo on 17 November 2001 were carried out in what Lord Robertson called "a positive climate". The vote elected a provisional assembly of 120 members. It will have powers in areas such as health, education and transport.
