The former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (1)
dominated the regular meeting of the North Atlantic Council -NATO's
top decision-making body- and the Political and Security Committee
(PSC) of the European Union on 22 August.

Operation
Essential Harvest launched
|
|
|
At 12 noon on 22 August, the Alliance decided to authorise the
Supreme Allied Commander Europe, General Ralston, to issue the Activation
Order for Operation Essential Harvest. The launching is taking place
just over two months after President Trajkovski sent a letter to
Lord Robertson asking for NATO assistance in restoring peace and
stability in the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (1).
The Alliance approved operational plan "Essential Harvest"
on 29 June 2001.

Ukraine
celebrates its 10th anniversary of independence
|
|
|
NATO Secretary General, Lord Robertson, sent a telegram of congratulations
to President Leonid Kuchma, commemorating the 10th anniversary of
Ukraine's independence. Ukraine achieved independence in 1991 and
immediately became an active partner of the Alliance. It is currently
a member of the Euro-Atlantic Partnership Council and of the Partnership
for Peace programme. It signed a special agreement with NATO in
1997 (a "Charter on a Distinctive Partnership) and has been
hosting a NATO Information and Documentation Centre in Kyiv ever
since.
