Statement of Secretary General on the situation in former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (1)

NATO Secretary General Lord Robertson issued a statement urging the conflict parties in the former Yugolslav Republic of Macedonia (1) to maintain the 5 July cease-fire.

At a special press conference given at NATO HQ on 25 July, NATO Secretary General, Lord Robertson, announced that he would be speaking to the President, government and political parties of the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (1) tomorrow, together with the EU High Representative for Common Foreign and Security Policy, Javier Solana, and the Chairman in Office of the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe and Foreign Minister, Mircea Geoana.

Implementing defence reform in Ukraine

Ukrainian defence reform and the problems of implementation are being discussed at a three-day workshop, 26-28 July, in Lancaster, United Kingdom. Participants will aim to develop practical recommendations on:

  • defence policy missions and roles and the alternative force structures and strategic options for Ukraine;
  • professionalisation of the armed forces, military education and training;
  • civil-military relations, including the democratic control of the armed forces, recruitment and ways of promoting public support for the military.

Lord Robertson helps reinvigorate Skopje peace talks

NATO Secretary General, Lord Robertson, helped reinvigorate talks aimed at ending five months of violence and averting war in the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (1) on a day's visit to the country on 26 July.
