New Deputy Secretary General

NATO's recently appointed Deputy Secretary General, Ambassador Minuto Rizzo, took up his functions on 16 July, following the retirement of Ambassador Sergio Balanzino. Ambassador Balanzino had held this position for seven years and officially left his post on 29 June.

Statement issued by NATO Secretary General Lord Robertson urging all political parties in ihe former Yugolsav Republic of Macedonia (1) to redouble efforts to reach a political settlement.

The Deputy Prime Minister of Serbia, Nebosja Covic, and the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, Goran Svilanovic, addressed the North Atlantic Council -NATO's top decision-making body- and met with NATO Secretary General Lord Robertson, 18 July. Lord Robertson stated that these talks had been "important, constructive and highly professional and were a milestone in developing the relationship between NATO and the Federal Yugoslav Republic of Yugoslavia…".

NATO Military Committee visits regional command

NATO's highest military authority, the Military Committee (MC), visited the regional southern command: Allied Forces Southern Europe (AFSOUTH) on 19 July. The chairman of the MC, Admiral Guido Venturoni and the nineteen NATO representatives received first-hand information on issues affecting the regional command which is now responsible for all NATO-led operations in the Balkans (see Implementation of new KFOR command arrangements).
