Defence spending and military personnel

The statistics represented graphically below come from the document NATO-Russia Compendium of Financial and Economic Data Relating to Defence that the NATO-Russia Council publishes once a year and can be found at www.nato.int/docu/pr/2005/p050609e.htm. In view of the difference between NATO's definition of defence expenditures and national definitions, the figures may diverge from those quoted by national authorities or given in national budgets. Data relating to France is indicative only because France does not belong to NATO’s integrated military structure and does not participate in collective force planning. Iceland has no armed forces. Figures for the Czech Republic, Hungary and Poland begin in 1999, when these three countries joined the Alliance. Figures for Bulgaria, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Romania, the Slovak Republic and Slovenia begin in 2004, when they joined the Alliance. The figures for 2004 are estimates.
