Ambassador John R. Anderson

Born on September 9, 1941

John R. Anderson was born on September 9, 1941, in Trail and raised in Oliver, Bitish Columbia. He graduated from the Regular Officer Training at the University of British Columbia in 1963 with a Bachelor of Science degree.

He was commissioned in 1963 and through his early naval carreer served in HMC Ships Saskatchewan, St. Croix., Bonaventure and Iroquois in both Atlantic and Pacific fleets.

Professional training included the Long Operations Officers course and Command and Staff College. He was appointed as Commanding Officer of HCMS Restigouche in 1978 and following promotion to naval Captain in 1982, he served as the Commander of First Canadian Destroyer Squadron and on the staff at the National Defence Headquarters in Ottawa.

He was promoted to the rank of Commodore in 1986 and was appointed as Director, Maritime Doctrine and Operations. In 1987, he was promoted Rear-Admiral and shortly afterwards was tasked to head the canadian Nuclear Submarine Acquisition Project. This was followed by his appointment as Chief, Maritime Doctrine and Operations in 1989.

He was promoted to Vice-Admiral in 1991 and served as the Commander of Maritime Command in Halifax until his appointment in 1992 as Vice Chief of the Defence Staff. He was promoted Admiral and appointed Chief of the Defence Staff in 1993.
