Lt General Ioannis Menagias

2005 -

Lieutenant General Ioannis Menagias was born on March 17 th 1951 in Athens.

He graduated the Air Force Academy in 1975 and was assigned as Second Lieutenant in a Freedom Fighters (F-5) interception squadron.

For fourteen years he served in various squadrons and he has fulfilled more than 2900 flying hours as a fighter pilot. In total he flew 4000 hours.

He successfully completed courses at various schools of his service in Greece and abroad including the Hellenic Air War College.

He served in different assignments at squadron level and has also served as Head of Operational Intelligence Section – Hellenic Air Force General staff from 1990 to 1993.

In 1993 to 1995 he served as staff officer at the Hellenic Military Delegation at NATO headquarters, Brussels.

From 1995 to 2000 he has been staff officer and then head of Hellenic – NATO relations section at the Hellenic National Defence General Staff (HNDGS). At the same time he has also been desk officer of the Hellenic CHODS.

In 2000-2001 he was appointed Commander of 130 CG (Limnos Island).

From 2001 to 2004 he was appointed Defence Policy Director in HNDGS.

In 2004 he assumed the position of the Chief of Staff of the Hellenic Tactical Air Force HQ in Larissa.

On March 2005 he was assigned Director of Strategies and Policies of the HNDGS.

On November 2005 Lieutenant General Ioannis Menagias was nominated for appointment as the Hellenic Military Representative to the EU Military Committee.

His personal decorations include Knight Commander of the Order of Honor, Medal of the Military Merit, Commendation Medal of Merit and Honor, Medal of order of Honor Commander’s Badge, Grand Commanders Badge of the order of Phoenix and Staff Officer Commendation Medal.

He speaks English and has good understanding of French.

Lieutenant General Ioannis Menagias is married to Eugenia Gelezi and has three children, two sons and one daughter.
