Director NATO Office of Security (NOS)
Wayne S. Rychak November 2000 - September 2004 Wayne Rychak has served as the Director of the NATO Office of Security since November 2000. He is the Secretary General's principal advisor on security issues and directs activities to protect NATO personnel, facilities and information. He chairs meetings of senior security authorities of the allied and partner nations, serves as the technical advisor for meetings and activities of the alliance's Security Services, and is responsible for the overall co-ordination of security within NATO. Mr. Rychak is a career member of the Senior Foreign Service of the U.S. Department of State and holds the personal rank of Minister Counselor. His career with the U.S. Government has focused on law enforcement and security affairs. Prior to joining NATO, he served as Deputy Assistant Secretary (1997-2000) in the Bureau of Diplomatic Security, U.S. Department of State where he was responsible for world-wide protective measures for U.S. Diplomatic facilities; computer, technical and construction security; and the Courier Service. He also served as the Office Director for Physical Security Programs (1993-1997) as well of the Director of the State Department's domestic Field Office operation (1986-1990) responsible for criminal investigations and the protection of visiting dignitaries. Mr. Rychak joined the State Department in 1975 and in addition to Washington assignments, he has served at U.S. Embassies in Brazil (1980-1981), Jamaica (1981-1983), Korea (1983-1986) and Pakistan (1990-1993). In 1988, he served as the head security co-ordinator for the U.S. Olympic Team at Seoul. From 1971 to 1975, Mr. Rychak worked for the Washington DC Metropolitan Police Department where he attained the rank of detective. Wayne Rychak received his undergraduate degree from the University of Pittsburgh and attended graduate studies at American University. He is also a 1990 graduate of the U.S. National Defense University, Industrial College of the Armed Forces. He and his wife, Colleen, have two children. |
