Thomas E. McKeever began service as the Director, NATO Office of Security in September 2004. He is the Secretary General’s principal advisor on security issues and directs activities to protect NATO personnel, facilities, and information. He chairs meetings of senior security authorities of the allied and partner nations, serves as the technical advisor for meetings and activities of the alliance’s Security Services, and is responsible for the overall co-ordination of security within NATO.
Mr. McKeever is a career member of the Senior Foreign Service of the U.S. Department of State and holds the personal rank of Minister Counselor. His career with the U.S. Government has focused on law enforcement and security matters. Prior to joining NATO, he served as the Assistant Director for Domestic Operations, 2002-2004, in the Bureau of Diplomatic Security (DS), U.S. Department of State where he was responsible for all domestic DS activities (investigative and close protection activities as well as physical security for Department buildings). He also served as the DS Regional Director for the Western Hemisphere, Chief of the Chemical/Biological Countermeasures Office, and Chief of the Criminal Investigations Division among other recent assignments for DS.
Mr. McKeever joined the State Department in 1975 and in addition to Washington assignments has served in El Paso, Texas and San Francisco, California as well as the U.S. Embassies in Argentina (1980-1982), the Dominican Republic (1982-1985) and U.S. Mission Geneva, Switzerland (1992-1995).
A 1973 graduate of Mount Saint Mary’s University in Emmitsburg, Maryland, Mr. McKeever and his wife Gigi have two children.
